What is new
Panasonic has released firmware version 2.1 for the Lumix S9, its compact full-frame mirrorless camera. Dated October 14, 2026, this free update brings three primary enhancements to the device.
Official manufacturer support pages show the release focuses on expanding video recording choices in a lighter format, adding custom controls for compatible glass, and ensuring compatibility with updated mobile software.
The details
- MP4 Lite expansion. Adds 4K at 60p and 50p, along with Full HD at 120p, 100p, 60p, and 50p, to the MP4 (Lite) settings.
- Bitrate details. The new 4K 60p option operates at 50 Mbps using 10-bit 4:2:0 H.265 encoding, which is half the bitrate of standard 4K 60p and a quarter of the 200 Mbps MOV setting.
- Lens Fn button growth. Users can now assign additional functions to the custom button on compatible lenses, including aspect ratio, video electronic stabilisation, Boost I.S., focus ring control, focus limiter, focus peaking, crop zoom, and video start or stop.
- Mobile app compatibility. The camera now fully supports version 1.7.0 or newer of the LUMIX Flow application.
- Companion app update. Panasonic also rolled out LUMIX Lab version 3.1.1, featuring support for the new MP4 Lite files and better look-up table management.
Background
The Panasonic Lumix S9 is a small-form-factor interchangeable lens camera built around a full-frame sensor. It is designed for creators who want high-end sensor performance in a minimalist body without traditional bulk.
MP4 (Lite) is a compressed recording profile intended for fast sharing, quick file transfers, and rapid editing workflows, making it popular for mobile-first publishing.
Who it matters to
This update is aimed at hybrid creators and social media shooters who rely on quick turnarounds and smaller file sizes. Creators working with mobile phones and associated LUMIX applications will benefit from the smoother high-frame-rate options.
Still photographers who rarely record moving images will find little here that alters their daily shooting routine, though those using compatible lenses gain slightly faster tactile adjustments.
